From statement on the series:
Hendler
authored an annual photo event/sociological project she calls the “Living Photo
Booth” at each year’s Mermaid Parade, capturing hundreds of mermaid parade
participants in her Photo Booth. These images capture ideas of temporality,
costume, acting out, mirage, sexuality, illusion, and play. The project as a
whole has both an artistic and sociological benefit for the investigation of
taboo, boundaries of social and private life and subcultures, held within the
confines of Hendler’s constructed stage each year. The project is a living document of
Coney Island and the people who participate in the events each year, as well
as being of continued interest for sociologists, anthropologists, and
historians interested in Coney Island.
